Small but Beautiful

Sikkim is a state in East India in the Himalayan foot hills also bordering China (Tibet), Nepal and Bhutan.The name has been coined from the words 'Su','Him'i.e. beautiful home.Though it should be better named by abode of nature.The snow covered mountains & lush green valleys not only invigorates one's soul,it also leaves the spectators bewildered by the extravaganza of its natural beauty. Nearly 40% of the total area is forested.

Most travel in Sikkim is done by bus or jeep on road. Trekking is also a popular option. It is better to contact a travel agent in NJP or Siliguri who will provide food, lodging, travelling, permits, but beware of the touts roaming in the station or bus stand. They will lead you to a travel agent and will obtain a commission of 15% of your whole travel package. As a result your package rate will be increased.

Best time to visit

October to December is the ideal time to visit Bhutan as the air is clear and fresh with sunny skies. January and February are colder, but from then until April the climate remains dry and pleasant and in late spring the famous rhododendrons bloom spectacularly, flooding the valleys with colour.

How to Reach

By Air: Newly built Greenfield Airport, is Sikkim’s only Airport located in Pakyong, and is 32.1 kms away from Gangtok. Bagdogra Airport of West Bengal is only 124 Kms away from Gangtok

By Car: Tourists often prefer to travel Sikkim by road enjoying the scenic beauty of the River Teesta on one side and soaring peaks parked along the other side of the road. Apart from Siliguri, Sikkim can also be easily reached from Darjeeling (126 km), Kolkata (700 km) Kalimpong (104 km) and Bagdogra (153 km).

East Sikkim

East Sikkim is one of four districts of Sikkim and the area is busy and more populous than any other districts of Sikkim, the capital Gangtok is also situated here. East Sikkim is dominated by Nepali and Indian community.

North Sikkim

Entry to North Sikkim is only possible on a guided tour, and a travel permit must be organised in Gangtok 1-2 days prior to travel. You would need a copy of your photo id card and 2 photos to obtain the permits for North Sikkim.

South Sikkim

South Sikkim is the most industrialised district in the state, owing to the availability of flat land. Since the geology is stable the roads are in good condition as compared to other parts of the state which suffer from landslides.

West Sikkim is a district in Sikkim. The highlight of West Sikkim is the amazing Himalayan treks in the foothills of Mt Kanchenjunga (also spelt Kangchendzonga). The rolling mountains also offer some "low altitude" treks.
